Mano Minute (3/20): The 12 years no one talks about ⏳

The average lifespan in the United States is 76.1 years. The average healthspan is 63.7 years.

That is a 12 year gap.

Healthspan is the number of years you live in good health, free from chronic disease, disability, and significant decline.

Lifespan is just how long you are alive. Most conversations about longevity focus on living longer. But the more important question is how you are living during those years.

That 12 year difference means the average person spends the last decade plus of their life dealing with chronic conditions, doctor appointments, medications, and a quality of life that looks very different from the decades before it.

The goal is not to add more years. The goal is to close the healthspan-lifespan gap.

When I think about health decisions, I try to think about them through this lens. Am I doing things now that extend my healthspan, or am I just hoping my lifespan takes care of itself?

The research is clear on what moves the needle:

  • Resistance training preserves muscle mass, which is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging
  • Adequate protein prevents the gradual muscle loss that accelerates after 30
  • Sleep quality affects hormone regulation, immune function, and cognitive health
  • Consistent daily movement keeps metabolic health in check

None of this requires extreme effort. It requires consistency over time. The compound effect of small daily actions is what determines whether those last 12 years are spent living or just surviving.

That is the entire mission at Mano. Close the gap. Not by adding complexity, but by getting the fundamentals right, consistently, for a long time.
