Mano Minute (3/19): Your brain can only handle four habits at a time 🔄

We try to change too many things at once.

New diet, new workout plan, better sleep schedule, daily journaling, less screen time. All at the same time. And by week three, most of it falls apart.

Here is why. The human brain cannot sustainably stick to more than about five new habits at a time. And even five is pushing it. The more decisions you have to make each day about new behaviors, the faster your willpower runs out.

This is why I love the Core 4 system. One habit for nutrition. One for movement. One for sleep. One for lifestyle. Or a combination of them. Four total. That is it.

The key is that each habit needs to be simple and achievable. Not aspirational. Not impressive. Achievable. Something you can actually do on your worst day, not just your best.

A beginner nutrition habit might be: eat protein at two meals.
A beginner movement habit: take a 20 minute walk.
A beginner sleep habit: no caffeine after 2pm.
A beginner lifestyle habit: 10 minutes of personal time.

You track four things. Four check marks. That is your day.

The goal is to do this long enough that those four habits stop requiring effort. They become automatic. They become routines. And once a habit becomes a routine, it no longer costs willpower. That is when you swap it for something slightly more challenging or in a different area of health.

This is the progression. Simple habits become routines. Routines free up capacity. Capacity allows you to level up. And the cycle continues.

TIP: Pick four habits right now, one from each pillar. Make each one something you are at least 90% confident you can do every day this week. Start there.
